Wills

A single Will can be written by someone of single status or someone who is married or in a civil partnership. However a single Will is for one person and one person only, and is not part of a joint Will.

A single Will should be written if you are single or if you wish to make a separate Will to your partner. This is generally a result of you and your partner having different wishes.

A Mirror Will is designed for couples whether unmarried, married or in a civil partnership, who wish to make Wills that reflect each other’s intentions. It is usual (but not mandatory) for couples to leave their estates to each other in the first instance and then to decide on who will receive their estate on second death.

Your Will allows you to:

  • Appoint people you trust to be your Executors, who will manage and administer your estate when you are gone.
  • Name who you wish to benefit from specific possessions or gifts
  • Name who will benefit from the remainder of your estate once all debts have been paid
  • Appoint Guardians, who are the people nominated in a Will to look after any children under the age of 18 in the event of both parent’s death.
  • Record any specific wishes regarding charities, pets or your funeral arrangements
  • Mirror Wills give a couple the opportunity to create a trust to protect assets for the beneficiary to receive their gift at the time the couple specify.
  • A will should be reviewed regularly and an individual can change his Will at any time.
